Is it better to run a product import (1000's of products) directly via a cron_dispatcher.php or through the shell?
For periodically updating records, which one is the better way to go, or does it even matter?

The cron dispatcher I found was in a 4 year old article in the bakery. I believe it pre-dates the shell and was an early "hack" to get shell access to Cake.
If that is the one you have looked at then I'd say the shell will be a better option. I use the shell for lots of things and it should have no problem importing a few thousand products.
